In honor of Curlfest Atlanta, which will be my very first experience at Curlfest -- despite the fact that I am from New York and it has been going on for five years -- I thought that it would be a great idea to talk about my natural hair journey! My journey to accepting and learning how to deal with natural hair did NOT happen over night; however, with time I grew as a person and in love with my natural hair.
March 2019
I made another giant leap. I colored my hair. Coloring my hair was a big step for me because it is something that I never saw myself doing because I liked my natural hair color so much. From this change, I learned that it is okay to open up new doors and try new things. I loved the color on me and it brightened up my face.
Since March 2019, I haven't made any changes to my hair. My hair has been growing and it is healthy. I love where my hair is at and this journey has taught me so many things about myself. I have grown with my journey into a completely different person. To think. . .this whole journey started with a simple question: "Why don't you just stop perming your hair?" I am in no way shape or form a natural hair expert. I believe that each day I am learned something new.
This journey has helped me grow as a person and it has helped me learn to love myself and who I am. When you spend four hours in the mirror looking at yourself and praying the twist out, finger coil, or braid out doesn't fail you learn to love the image looking back at you.
I have developed a deeper love and understanding for myself. I am not perfect, but I love the journey and path that I am on. I would never change it for the world.
I support #TheNaturalHairMovement. I think that it is important for our culture. I am glad that children today are able to see so many women embracing who they are and not changing their appearance. I cannot wait to see where this journey takes me.
So far, my natural hair journey has brought positivity, self-love and self-growth into my life. I think that it is important for people to let go of the negativity associated with the natural hair movement and embrace it. Everyone's journey is different. Everyone's hair type is original. Everyone within the natural hair movement is unique. Do not compare yourself to Youtubers or Social Media Influencers. The Natural Hair Movement is about embracing who you are and not caring about anyone else.
I recommend anyone going natural to take your time. It is not an automatic change, but trust me your natural hair will get to where you want it to get. In addition to that, I recommend the big chop. The big chop is so freeing and it really will kick start that journey for you. It will also help you let go of negative energy and embrace all things positive. It will give you more confidence in who you are as a person.
Let go of the heat damage and the perms! You do not need it. Embrace your natural kinky curly curls!
P.S.A.
Many people say that natural hair costs too much money and that natural hair salons cost too much, but remember a good weave -- with installation and bundle prices -- could cost up to and above $300. With that money, you can go to a natural hair salon TWICE. So, why not invest on making your hair healthier and the African American community richer?
